For one person you need approximately 4 sprouts and 4 chestnut mushrooms, depending on their size and your appetite, plus optional extras fresh ginger, bacon strips, sherry, soy sauce, flaked almonds. Oil. Slice the sprouts and mushrooms and grate a small amount of ginger. Heat a tablespoon or so of cooking oil fairly hot, add the ginger for a few seconds then the sprouts and mushrooms (and bacon if using). Stir around as they fry, and when nearly cooked add a splash of sherry and/or a splash of soy sauce plus a roughly a desert spoonful of flaked almonds. Stir around a bit more then eat straightaway. Romanesco – a type of broccoli I first saw this green pointy cauliflower in Italy and have tried growing it with limited success on my allotment. The plants this year grew huge, but the heads were on the small side, providing one or two helpings. They sell them in the shops here now the ones sold by Tiers are grown in Chidham and are much bigger. They are more delicate and fragile than cauliflowers. To stop them going to mush, florets only need a couple of minutes boiling or steaming, or they can be stir-frie d. Lyn Davies
